In 2006, the Geek Syndicate was born. And who came roaring out but a pair of crazy-yet-loveable geeks by the names David “Monts” Monteith and Barry “Nuge” Nugent. Producing a weekly (well most of the time) podcast celebrating and commenting all aspects of geek life GS is one of the longest running geek related podcasts in the UK. It’s critically acclaimed, irreverent, touching, intellectual, nonsensical, fairly drunken, incredibly sexy, hilarious…er…and stuff.

Oct 9, 2006

Barry & David talk about the first comics they ever read.
David talks about Labyrinth a novel by Kate Mosse (not the model)
The boys give a tribute to the late David Gemmell; make some comments about Alex Ross's Justice and Barry gives his opinon on the Miami Vice movie.
And then we take apart the Star Wars saga - movie by movie.

This episode is bought to you by Glenfiddich Malt Whiskey......a lot of Glenfiddich Malt Whiskey.

Thanks for the comments tim..for the record dave was far drunker(is that a word ?) than me he just hides it better (after all he is an actor).

knights of dark reknown is a great read. I would check out (unless you\\\'ve already done so) the waylander books and quest for lost heroes (my fave gemmell book).

as for the over sentimaental return of the jedi ending years ago I would have agreed and a part of me still does(EWOKS!!!). when dave I went to the cinema i think it was last year to watch all three moives back to back ROTJ worked for me..the darkness and evil of the emperor, anakain\\\'s sacrifice of anakin to save his son luke burning his body then seeing his dad with ben and yoda was all good stuff. Not so sure about the dancing in the ewok village could have done wihtout that bit george...anyway thanks for the comment and support mate.

Very entertaining boys !! Liked the MILF comments ...Mosse with 2 ss\'s !!!
You know what I think of Gemmell and for me it still is King Beyond the Gate. Though Stormrider was powerfull stuff too.
Agree with the Star Wars stuff and as we all know Dave is always wrong. Got to go with Empire as it developes all the characters really well and has much more scenes of joy and despair.
One thing not mentioned was the prophecy of someone to bring \'balance\' to the Force. He did but not in the way the Jedi wanted it.

Guys, just listened to your second Podcast, and found it most entertaining.....Barry, afraid to say you sounded a lot drunker(?) than Dave. Some points.....David Gemmell, I\'ve read a couple of his Books and thought they too were excellent in the fantasy genre. I agree \'Legend\' is er.....Legendary. I also read, and really enjoyed, Knights of Dark Reknown.
As for the Star Wars films, I\'ve actually only seen Episodes 1-3 once, and you\'ve inspired me to want to watch them all again, despite the negative reviews. My main irritation on first 3 were that they looked so different to Ep. 4-6. The cinematography, which I agree with Dave is excellent, is miles apart from 4-6. Why the big CGI landscape and vista\'s? The groups of films look and feel a lot different, I know 20 years separates them, but that I think is one of the fundamental flaws of Ep.1-3. However, I agree with Barry that ESB is the best film. Ep.4, if you think about it, could be a standalone movie, and was clearly made that way. This is understandable as the studio and Lucas had to get a feel of how is would go down with the audience, but therefore I think it is limited. Ep 5 I like because it really develops the characters and as Barry says, the good guys are really done over. It is the dark to Ep.4 light...and that\'s why I think it is the best and most successful film. Unfortunately while Ep.6 is enjoyable and find it overly sentimental at the end, and to me, it sort of ruins it. Anyway, waffled on enough, better get back to work. Keep the podcasts up.
